A weekend exploring Málaga...
Alright, I'm a little behind on my blogging... Let's just say that I am really enjoying 'spanish time' and zero obligations. When I return to Canada I hope to bring back my new relaxed lifestyle; ideally leaving behind the tardiness.
(When I know how to write something in Spanish I am going to do so. My mind is constantly switching between english and spanish. I catch myself structuring my english sentences weirdly and using words in english that I wouldn't normally use.) Maybe my next dream will be in Spanish... Wishful thinking but you never know!
My weekend began with Málaga's equivalent of 'The Taste of Edmonton'; Feria de la Tapas a Plaza de Torres la Malagueta. Local restaurants from Málaga got together to offer a taste of their finest tapas. Comí rabo de torro... yup, I ate the tail of a torro. After tapas my classmates and I went to the harbor for a drink before calling it a night. The harbor in Málaga is beautiful! It was a very pleasant evening with mi chica italiana.
Por el sábado pasado, yo fui al centro de Málaga con mis amigas de suizas; Ramona y Daniela. Nosotros caminamos juntos por once horas. After spending 11 hours together one would think that we'd be sick of each other. This was not the case at all. I really enjoy the company of these two young ladies. I am really looking forward to visiting them in Switzerland in the months to come.
So why do I enjoy my time so much with my Swiss 'sisters'...
I enjoy their outlook on life; in my opinion its very optimistic. They strongly believe that happiness is a choice and are eager to seek it. The best way for me to try and explain what I mean is through examples...
One of Ramona's comments was about the word 'problem'. I don't remember the exact context of the conversation but it involved dealing with a problem. She mentioned that most people look at a problem from a negative angle. It's a 'PRO'-blem... Pro means for you... Your problem is for you and you are meant to benefit from it. Something good will come from your problem. How refreshing is it to have such a negative word flipped upside down! I like it! This new way of thinking really turns an ugly situation into an opportunity for change, for growth and a problem becomes much more bearable.
Otro ejemplo...
As much as we'd like (at least I'd love) never to say something negative, it's just not realistic. You can't always say something positive. Sometimes you have to tell people the ugly truth right. When my Swiss chicas have something negative to say they create a 'sandwich'... Positive comment - negative comment - positive comment. I thought that was interesting; very different. Sneaky but cute.
And lastly, Ramona and Daniela have a very simplistic way of living. Daniela doesn't have a television at home. Her family believes that TV is a luxury that takes away the creativity of a person. Daniela's innocence is beyond refreshing and just because she's innocent doesn't mean anyone can take advantage of this young lady. She's very bright about what's really going on around here. I enjoyed her brutal honesty! Daniela's artistic mind reminds me of Kayla. She is preparing to study/ work as a graphic designer. I wish the two could meet. Perhaps it's because my mind is open but I never would have thought someone so young could open my eyes to so many new things.
And Ramona. Ramona only takes cold showers and gets 5 hours of sleep a night because she thinks warm water and sleep are unnecessary luxuries. She eats what I call 'clean' food; fresh food with minimum spices. She tries to cook everything from scratch. I mean everything! I was so impressed. It may have even inspired me to try to make... bake... and cook more from scratch when I return home.
They explained to me that happiness is a choice. When people in Switzerland aren't happy they make a change. They take matters into their owns hands to make a change; never getting worked up over something little and unimportant. They take things as they come and embrace them for what they are.
For 11 hours we never worried once about where we were going or what we were going to do. So laid back. Picture. Perfect.
Ramona and Daniel, thank you for letting me share my passions with you and for sharing yours with me.
Un beso y hasta pronto...
